Same ground underfoot, same distance walked, same weather. The whole gap is a licensed guide with the party every walking day, a cook with a stove and fuel, a horseman with animals for the bags, and a vehicle held for the group on the road days.

Take the guide alone. A licensed guide costs the operator $110 to $190 a day across the countries in this catalogue, and the operator also carries his bed, his meals and his travel out to the start. Over a fortnight that is $1,540 to $2,660 inside one line. A cook and a kitchen assistant add $70 to $130 a day. A driver with a vehicle held for your party is $130 to $310 a day for the vehicle, whether four people sit in it or one. Across fourteen days those three lines account for the gap.

The fifth rung buys the things that cannot be assembled from a laptop in New Orleans: a permit issued in your name, a ranger required to walk with you, the seat on the weekly boat that the operating company holds under its own licence, the one bed at the end of the track. The rest of the fortnight is yours to run, and the figure shows it. Neither end of the chain is the correct answer to anything; the five rungs side by side sets the five out side by side, and the whole ladder, top to bottom holds all twenty seven in order.

Length, and how early the question is asked

Nights are close to linear once the fixed lines are paid. The arrival transfer, the permit paperwork and the guide's travel out to the start are bought once, whether you stay nine nights or nineteen. Travelling by yourself, the other half is the single supplement, running from about $180 on a short trip to about $1,100 on fourteen nights with a private washroom. It is the second half of a bed with nobody in it, quoted as its own line rather than folded into a rate.

At the far end of the chain it goes either way. On some fifth rung trips the supplement disappears, because the beds are bunks in a hut charged per body. On others the only unit that exists is a cabin and one traveller takes all of it. Where an operator runs a set departure and can pair you with another traveller of the same sex, it says so, and says what becomes of the supplement if the pairing falls through.
